Australian Government Commits to Transforming Aged Care, Prioritising Dignity for Older Australians
The Australian Government has made a significant pledge to restore dignity and respect to the aged care sector by implementing crucial measures in response to the recommendations put forth by the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. The 2023-24 Budget includes key initiatives aimed at improving the quality of care and support for older Australians.
One of the most notable initiatives is the funding of the Fair Work Commission's interim decision, which grants a remarkable 15% pay increase for aged care workers. This wage increase recognizes the intricate and essential nature of their work, ensuring that they are fairly compensated.
The Government is also committed to enhancing provider regulation by introducing a new regulatory model. This model will be reflected in a new Aged Care Act, and it will strengthen the measurement of quality standards, promoting accountability and transparency within the sector.
To address the broader funding arrangements in aged care, an Aged Care Taskforce will be established. This taskforce will thoroughly review existing funding models and propose options to create a fair and equitable system that benefits all Australians.
Additionally, the final design of the Support at Home program, originally scheduled to commence on July 1, 2023, has been postponed to allow for further refinement. This program aims to provide comprehensive support to older individuals in their own homes.
Putting the needs of older Australians at the forefront, the Government has prioritised assigning care places based on individual requirements in residential aged care facilities. This move ensures that each person receives the appropriate level of care and support.
Moreover, the Government is introducing new initiatives that enable general practitioners (GPs) to deliver healthcare services to aged care residents through the My Medicare program. This initiative aims to enhance medical care and support within residential aged care facilities.
Recognising the importance of long-term sustainability in the aged care system, the Government will closely monitor providers for financial risks and viability. Targeted programs will be implemented to provide support where needed, ensuring the stability of the sector.
Lastly, the Government is committed to improving access to high-quality aged care for First Nations elders. Efforts will be made to boost support for providers and enhance worker training to build the capacity to deliver culturally appropriate care.
With this comprehensive approach, the Australian Government aims to transform the aged care sector, prioritising the dignity and well-being of older Australians while creating a sustainable and equitable system for all.
